Why Artwork Matters In Home Staging

At Rooms With Style, our team knows that using artwork to highlight the features of a space is integral to the home staging process. Artwork has the ability to define a space by giving it a sense of style and character. Decorating with it transforms a room by adding color, texture and warmth, which makes it feel inviting to potential homebuyers. Our team is excited to share ideas on how to beautifully display artwork to the benefit and enjoyment of homeowners and potential homebuyers alike.

The correct artwork really matters in home staging. Artwork that goes against the overall aesthetic of the home can work against it, making a space feel too overwhelming or chaotic. For example, picking pieces that are too bold in a classically styled space, or artwork too large in a small space, will work against your home aesthetic. Choosing the right artwork to enhance and highlight your home is critical. There are a few factors that are important to keep in mind as you choose the correct pieces for your home.

You can use artwork to emphasize your home’s greatest features. Think about the architectural elements of your home. Bring attention to the grand lofted ceilings in your entryway by choosing artwork with height or a series of two to three coordinating, stacked art pieces to draw the eye upwards. To spotlight a home’s fireplace, choose a large art piece or mirror to adorn the mantle. Doing so will make this beautiful architectural feature shine.

When choosing artwork for you home, you must consider the color, size and style of the pieces. Artwork in the right colors can really enhance a space. Think about the current colors in your home or the colors you plan to incorporate into your home. If your home has a neutral color palette, you should tend towards pieces that will compliment and reinforce this palette.

When it comes to artwork the size makes a difference as well. Pieces that are too large can overwhelm a space, and artwork that is too small can get lost in a room. In terms of staging, a general rule is that abstract art works well in most spaces. Picking something too modern, or with very bold colors can overwhelm a space, stealing the attention of a potential homebuyer.

When it’s time to hang your artwork, the right height, arrangement and placement will make your artwork shine. The general rule of thumb is to hang your art 60-62 inches from the floor to the center of the piece. If you are stacking pieces vertically, the center of the combined pieces should be 60-62 inches from the floor. Groupings of artwork should be hung with just 1-3 inches between each piece. Other interesting arrangements you can use for your art include a grid design or a gallery wall. You can incorporate other accents to your gallery wall such as sconces, mirrors or other sculptural elements. Try featuring a single piece of artwork by mounting a picture light above it.

When thinking about placement of artwork, consider the other large elements in the room. A wide sofa is perfect for a set of two or three pieces that span the wall behind it. A single large piece looks great at the head of a dining table or above a bed. Artwork hung in the corner of a room next to an arm chair and a floor lamp can complete a cozy vignette in your home. Art above furniture can be hung 4-6 inches above the piece and should span 2/3 the width of the furniture.
